Current News and Events

What we did over our summer vacation.

As the school bell rang on the last day of school this past June 16, 2010, most would think our school quiets down for a nice summer vacation. Nothing is further from the truth. This is when a lot of work begins at St. John the Baptist School in Peabody.

Our two custodians, along with outside assistance, work straight through the summer making many improvements to our school. Our school was built in 1916 with an addition built in 1966. Needless to say upkeep of our physical plant is of utmost importance.

Every summer floors are sanded and refinished, classrooms are painted, rugs are shampooed and ceilings are repaired. The summer custodial staff then handles specific requests from teachers for work to be done in their classrooms.

This past summer some of the original classroom floors needed to be replaced for safety reasons. Kitchen improvements were made and a food storage area was built. An upgrade of bathroom stalls along with hand dryers and motion sensitive soap dispensers have made our bathrooms more sanitary. Hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed throughout the school. An expansion of our early childhood learning centers was also completed along with a new outside playground. Smartboards have also been installed in a majority of our classrooms to enhance technology in grades one through eight. A large project completed this summer was the conversion from oil to gas heat.

Our school has all the charm you would expect to find in a building constructed in 1916 but safety and efficiency is always on the top of our “to do” list. The Principal along with the custodial staff are experts at using every available space for our growing enrollment and expanding extracurricular programs.
